Both tools get mentioned in the same "how do I stop leaking secrets" conversations, so it's a fair question whether they compete. They don't, for a simple reason: they're built to answer different questions. TruffleHog focuses on detecting exposed credentials, while EnvShield centers on validating configuration contracts.

Let's be honest: .env.example files have a reputation problem. Everyone knows they're important and nobody quite trusts them. Mine's usually out of date within a month — missing whatever variable got added in a PR nobody reviewed for configuration changes.
